Sociology for the Non-sociologist
Sociology for the Non-sociologist
Every day, we move through the world impacted by the social structures we’ve created.
Sociologists look past our common sense perspective of the world, the familiar, and try to view it as an outsider, as if it is strange, in order to discover the where what, and how of the weird things we do.
This is finding the strange in the familiar.
Each episode, Dr. Baker and a co-host who isn’t in the field will be interviewing other sociologists about their work.

“One of my frustrations with sociology, with all of academia, really, is the inaccessibility of our research to the public. Often our research is published behind a paywall. And it’s a shame because there are so many fantastic scholars doing really amazing work.”

“The excitement of sociology is usually of a different sort…It is not the excitement of coming upon the totally unfamiliar, but rather the excitement of finding the familiar becoming transformed in its meaning. The fascination of sociology lies in the fact that its perspective makes us see in a new light the very world in which we have lived our lives. “
– Peter Berger, Invitation to Sociology
